Exploring Gratitude with Your Child

This is a collaborative post

When we express gratitude for the things we have and the relationships we have built, we are far more likely to approach life with a positive view, which helps us cope with adversity and relish good experiences. With that said, parents should encourage their child consider things they are grateful for and express it in appropriate ways. Here are some tips from a private nursery in Harpenden.

Talk About What You’re Grateful For

Try and find regular opportunities to talk to your child about what they’re grateful for. Perhaps each member of your family can take it in turns to share something at dinner time so that you can all feed off one another’s positivity. It could be something as simple as being grateful for someone giving you a lift or cooking you a meal, or it could be something bigger, like being grateful that you have a roof over your head and a home with heating and electricity.

Another option is to encourage your child to write a gratitude journal that they fill out each evening before bed. The trick is to help them think about the wonderful things in life that are often taken for granted, which should lead to a more fulfilling life.

Put a Positive Spin on Things

Life is full of ups and downs, but you should try and put a positive spin on things where you can. For instance, you may have to change your plans due to bad weather. Rather than complaining about it, you should say something like “Never mind, we will have a lovely day playing board games at home instead”. If your child falls and skins their knee, talk about how brave they have been. Your attitude will have a huge influence on your child and their outlook on life.

Send Thank You Cards

If your child has recently had a birthday party, encourage them to send thank you cards to their friends, firstly for attending the party, and secondly for giving a gift and/or card. The idea is to teach your child the importance of telling people when you are grateful for something they have done, which will promote positive relationships.
