How to make moving easy for your family

This is a collaborative post

If you have young children moving can be a really stressful event. Not only do you have to pack up a whole house but you have to do so whilst looking after the children who inevitably unpack things as quickly as you try to pack them or make a mess elsewhere!

Get help

Moving house isn’t something you can do on your own. This is a great time to get support from friends and family whether it be for babysitting, moving furniture or helping you pack. The help you have can make sure a difference and take a lot of the stress away and often you will have someone in your life who is happy to help.

Hiring a man and a van will be a lifesaver too. It is cheaper than a removals company but just as effective. A man and a van provide someone or a couple of people to carry all your boxes for you and take them to the rooms they need to be in for you.

Prioritise the kid’s rooms

When you are packing up your old house it can make a big difference to leave your children’s room until last. This gives them somewhere to play whilst you pack other things and can also minimise the disruption for them.

When you are having the van loaded put the children’s things on last so that they are first off. Then whilst the van is being unloaded you can be unpacking what you can in the children’s room so they feel at home very quickly.

Consider childcare

Can you move house on a day the children are in nursery or school? If you can this will make such a difference and minimise the disruption for them. If they are not attending that day then could you add in an extra session at the nursery or do you know a local childminder who can care for them as a one-off? How about looking at after school care for older children in the area you are moving to. There are After School sessions in most areas and the After School Programs in Elkridge, MD are perfect if you are moving to that area. It sounds like you are adding costs unnecessarily but it really will make all the difference to the stress of the moving day for you.

Make the children feel involved

If you have older children then ensuring they feel involved can make the day run more smoothly. I would suggest giving them a bookshelf to arrange or perhaps clothes to hang in the wardrobe depending on their age or abilities to keep them busy. Add in some music or tv and you really will have them busy and out of your way!
